ASK BETTY: WHY RACING IN A BLACK KIT IN A HOT CLIMATE WILL NOT SABOTAGE YOUR RACE June 24 2015, 0 Comments
As women we ALWAYS want to look good on race day. Choosing our race outfit is just as important as our nutrition and equipment. For many of us that means wearing black.
If, however, you are a triathlete who panics at the thought of racing in the heat and you are considering wearing an all white kit to keep you cool (please God no – don’t do it ) the good news is that you don’t have to ditch your beloved black kit on race day.
The fear about wearing black is rational albeit, in our experience, incorrect. We all know that if you touch a black car on a hot sunny day it will feel hot. That is because the metal in your car acts like a heat sink. The good news for you is that 1) your kit is a thin piece of cloth and not a hunk of metal 2) you are not a machine. Unlike a car, you sweat and thermoregulate to help you manage the heat.
In our experience outfitting thousands of athletes, if you get hot racing in the heat it is, well, because you get hot racing in the heat. Some people do better in the heat than others and wearing a black kit won't likely put you over the edge. The only way you can deal with heat is to train in the heat to get used to it or get new parents and new genetics. Worrying about a few millimeters of breathable cloth is not going to appreciably change how hot you are on race day. Wearing a white kit will just make you look wet and nasty when you get out of the water and make you cringe when you see your pictures on race day.
Don’t believe us – how about looking at what they professionals do? Do you think that professionals with money and Kona points on the line would wear black kits if they were really a detriment? I have been designing kits for professional athletes for dozens of years. Professionals like Craig Alexander, Luke McKenzie and Beth Gerdes sport black kits and don’t give it a second thought.
If that were not enough to convince you, here are a few more reasons why black may be the correct decision in race day:
1) Black makes everyone look better. It's true. It's slimming + sexy.
2) Black doesn't get dirty. When coming out of a muddy lake swim your kit won't be ruined. How many times have you seen someone in a light-colored kit cross a finish line looking filthy. Racing XTERRA? Don't even get me started. Wearing a black kit allows for spilling colored electrolyte drinks down your front, charging through puddles on your bike and wiping sticky hands on your shorts.
3) Todays fabrics are not the same as your parents wore in 1985. With today's technology in fabrics, kits are much more ventilated, breathable and lightweight. We also have aid stations on the run. Grab some ice. Stick it down your pants. You may shriek but it will help cool down your core temperature.

Hard to believe we are almost at our 5 year mark of being in business! Things could not have been possible without a number of great people in my life. Our new partnership with Hincapie Sports was an exciting change this year so we decided to get together to celebrate the next chapter and host a mini fashion show highlighting some new + updated collections. Thanks to George + Rich for making the trip to raise a glass as well. Special thanks also to Oakley, ASICS, NUUN + Saint Archer.
So much fun we hope to do it again next year!
ASK BETTY / WHY DOES MY TRI TOP RIDE UP? April 02 2015, 0 Comments
Why Does My Tri Top Ride Up?
Clothing malfunctions are no fun - especially for type-A triathletes who expect perfection. I am no different. I have been racing since 1994 and like my race kit to be TIGHT. I don't want stuff flapping in the wind taking away precious seconds or distracting me from the task at hand.
The problem is that no matter what brand I try (I tried them all), I always find that my tri-top rides up during the run.
Recently we received several questions about tri tops riding up and bunching over the hips from our customers. The questions people ask are “Is it a manufacturing defect?” or “Did I purchase the incorrect size?”
The reality is that if your tri top rides up – it is because you are fit as hell and looking badass on the race course. Think about it, when a properly fitting tri top is pulled down all the way, the bottom should sit at the widest part of your hips. For me, that measurement is 35 inches. This is an issue because the narrowest part of my torso (at the bottom of my rib cage) is 28 inches. This hourglass shape that most of us have is what causes the tri top to ride up. If you are going to wear a tight fitting top, no matter what you do, physics will dictate that when you run, twist, and boogie during your race, your top will ride up and settle at the smallest part of your torso.
As far as I am concerned, when it comes to tri tops moving during a race, it is what it is. For the last 20 years, I've been tugging at my tops while racing and survived. So do the pros. Look at race photos and you are going to see some bunching in the images. It honestly doesn't really bother me.
What bothers me more is when I yank off my wetsuit and the leg bands roll up and I have to add time into T1 to straighten them out before throwing a leg over my bike.
When you are fitting your trip top, remember that all women are shaped differently and have differing fit preferences. It might take a little experimentation to find the size/fit you like. If it rides up when you are racing a tiny bit my recommendation is to not sweat the small stuff. At the end of the day if it really bugs you - go with a trisuit.
Just get out there and be #badassisbeautiful in #bettystyle!

TREND OF THE MOMENT—LOUD LEGGINGS January 08 2015, 1 Comment
Betty is fond of fashion trends that are loud. Neon. Bring it. Animal prints. Done. Granny florals on your legs? Why not.
Printed leggings are everywhere and the good news is that solids are out and flashy, bold prints are in. The louder the better. Check out what Adidas, Nike, Lululemon, Onzie, Athleta and Trina Turk have recently launched. Complete fun!
FRESH BABY POOP December 08 2014, 0 Comments
Each year Pantone announces their Color of the Year. The fashion industry often incorporates The Pantone Color of the Year into their clothing lines. I religiously research color + fashion trends from several resources to come up with ideas for future collections. I often incorporate Pantone's Color of the Year into my line. In 2013 it was Emerald. I used the color in my launch of the Brazilian Bikini. In 2014, it was Radiant Orchid which found itself woven into some of my custom design work.
2015 poses a problem for the company who first said “where runway fashion meets sport.” This year the Pantone color, as best I can tell, is a fancy name for fresh baby poop. The Pantone color is Marsala. Marsala?! Sounds good in Italian cooking but not sure this is something women want to wear on the race course. This year runway fashion + sport are going to keep in touch but maybe a bit of separation is in order.
Good thing I am constantly clipping things from magazines and catalogs and layering them on my inspiration wall in my office. Plenty of visuals for me come up with future ideas. Take a little tour of my wall and see what inspires Betty!

Since this is one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year, I confess, I’ve been cruising the web and checking out all kinds of pretty things. Some of my faves for the season are frye booties, calvin klein bralettes, sexy sandals, butter london neutral polishes, silver statement collar necklaces handmade by shantique designs, graphic-weaved cozy scarves, laser cut lace feminine dresses, trina turk calf hair clutch in an unpredictable hue + urban decay's naked palettes.
WHAT WAS BETTY THINKING WITH THE JETT PAK? November 24 2014, 1 Comment
You know how the day before a race when you are making your checklist, laying out everything on the floor and trying to figure out where everything is going to go in your transition bag? Yeah. Me too. I've always had one of those "fancy" hi-tech transition bags with multiple pockets, dry sections, clips, external pods, etc. and what I found is that they were just too complicated.
Sometimes you just want to throw everything into one bag. That was the goal with the Jett Pak. One gigantic compartment to fit everything you need for race morning or a weekend get away. As a type-A personality, I always put smaller things into Ziploc® bags when I pack my stuff anyway.
The Jett Pak sets up on the floor and stands on its own with wide-open arms waiting to receive all your stuff. Go ahead. Throw it all in there.
Aside from the size and ease of use, the Jett Pak hits my stylish side. I've always had a thing for animal skins and wondered why no one did anything fun with transition bags. Guess they have to appeal to both men & women? Not Betty. Heck yeah, I'd celebrate if a guy wanted to rock it, but let's be honest, this baby is just for us and I'm okay with that.
I usually have a white-phobia with anything sport because I tend to get dirty, but this faux skin wipes clean easily with a baby wipe and doesn't absorb dirt. Pretty cool, huh?! I dare you, get yourself one and roll into transition, spin class, the yoga studio, or onto the airplane. It might make you stand a little taller and push a little harder in your workout.

Lucky Betty. I got to volunteer for the swim this year at the Ironman World Championship. In past years I brought up the rear, but this year I got to be in the front with Jenny Kalmbach for the Pro Women. So much fun and what an amazing way to watch the beginning of the race. A photographer for Sports Illustrated was on the course and caught me taking my job quite seriously. At least I didn't fall in!
Behind The Design: 2014 Kona Collection September 27 2014, 5 Comments
It's almost time to hop on a plane and head to my favorite event of the year—The Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. This is the 3rd year Betty Designs will have boutique shopping in the Ironman Expo. This year, I changed things up and developed a collection just for the race. The Kona Collection includes swimsuits, water bottles, cycle jerseys + shorts, and tri tops + tri shorts.
The design is a combination of elements from fashion runways; with bright hits of pop surf culture while still keeping things "very Betty." Instead of traditional hibiscus flowers I combined a more artsy, floral pattern with my favorite motif, butterflies, and a bold tribal / geometric pattern. For color, I wanted to showcase a unique combination of bright lemonade yellow + indigo blue giving a nod to the sun and water elements of The Island. The end result is Betty's take on the granny floral print.
The Kona Collection will be available in The Pink Booth (you can't miss it) race week in the main Ironman Expo on Ali'i Drive starting Tuesday, October 7 @ noon through the end of the week. In addition to The Kona Collection, Betty will have accessories, casual tanks, rash guards, beach towels, H20 capris, swimsuits, and my personal favorite—The Retro Trucker. Stop by and shop while supplies last.
Last thing - if you buy a bikini AND a 1 pc sexy back training suit, you will receive a FREE matching mesh Kona gear bag. The Kona bikini design is the one The Bettys will be wearing in the infamous Underpants Run on Thursday morning. Grab one before they are gone!
Hope to see you!

GEAR TESTING IN COSTA RICA March 10 2014, 1 Comment
I have some crazy friends. Roch Frey & Heather Fuhr (yes, the one that has won 15 Ironman-distance races) suggested my boyfriend and I join them for a week in Costa Rica. I had never been, so I thought it would be a ton of fun. Hot weather agrees with me, and they tempted me by outlining the perfect vacay. Some surfing, mountain biking and lounging by the pool in some top notch resorts. Perfect for wear-testing environment for my gear.
The plan was to do a ride that Roch & Heather did about 8 years ago. According to Roch's old GPS data, we would have up to 3-4 hours of riding a day, but plenty of time to chill. Nytro & Cannondale helped us to get the perfect solid Trail 29ers for our adventure. I was a bit concerned about 4 consecutive days in the saddle, but Roch assured me "I'd be fine." I upped my road riding a little bit, and did some mountain bike riding on the weekends with my son on what I thought would be, similar terrain to the fire roads we'd be tackling in Costa Rica.
Here's the reality: I did get to surf the first couple of days. I also ended up with gnarly chaffing from surfing on a rough, rented foam surfboard sans rash guard, but I will save this story for another time. The riding ended up being WAY over my head. We conquered close to 170 miles in 4 days. Over 20,000 ft of climbing. On mountain bikes. Rough roads with washboard bumps and loose gravel. Multiple river crossings. Frightening descents. Multiple meltdowns. Filthy humans. Lots of saddle sores. BUT, we stayed in 2 of the most amazing places FlorBlanca and Hotel Punta Islita.
Some thoughts I had before our trip:
1) I'm pretty tough
2) I love heat
3) 4 days in a row on my bike sounds like a lot
4) I can't climb
5) I don't like riding my bike all day
6) I like getting dirty
7) I descend like a granny
8) I am going to miss Gavyn
After our trip I revisited these thoughts:
1) I'm pretty tough. Even with the meltdowns due to being scared out of my mind on descents and frustrated because I was not having any fun riding all day long. I mentally fought to finish what I started. Physically my fitness was not a problem. See #5.
2) I love heat. The average temperature was mid-90s and really wasn't bad because it was the dry season. I will take heat over cold any time!
3) 4 days on my bike IS a lot.
4) I can climb. yes, really. I never believed I could, but by day 4 I was going up things I never thought possible. That was pretty cool.
5) I don't like riding my bike all day. Never have. Never will.
6) I like getting dirty. Always have. Always will.
7) I (still) descend like a granny, but now I go down a lot more technical and steeper descents with (some) confidence.
8) I missed the hell out of Gavyn. It was the longest stretch I had gone since his birth without talking to him or seeing him. Next time, he's coming with us.
Lastly, I can't imagine having done this adventure with any other people. The three of them know me well and we all had some good laughs once the tears dried and now that the saddle sores are gone. Costa Rica is beautiful. It was an experience I will never forget and I will be back. Only next time, more surfing, 4 wheeling, relaxing and chill time.
A PHOTO SHOOT WITH A COUPLE OF BETTYS! February 16 2014, 0 Comments
Its been pretty fun on this journey. As a creative person, my mind constantly overflows with things I want to design, both product-wise, and from a branding perspective. At the end of January, I finally had the talent and resources to pull together a shoot that I've had in my mind for a long time. I found the perfect Betty—Elise, to be the model for the 2014 line. She embodies everything Betty stands for. She's beautiful inside and out and is one bad ass athlete. She does it all—runs, yoga, paddles, surfs big waves, cycles and has even done an Ironman. She's fearless + feminine.
My dear friend who has stood by me and watched this process, Kirsten, has been helping me out more and more with things as the company grows. She's got a great eye for product, design and a disposition that makes everyone feel at ease. She helped on the set with all the little details so I could be free to do what I do best—be creative!
And let's not forget that a great image truly makes a brand shine. I've watched The Main Freak take a hobby and hone his skills from the ground up. Asking questions, watching videos, trying out new things. I'm thankful to have him on my Team and his partnership with Leucadia Photo Works has now given Betty a home to create the brand imagery I've been dreaming of.
Ok. Enough babbling. I'm off to ride my bike and think about the next things I'm going to design.

BLESSINGS November 28 2013, 2 Comments
Yes. It's Thanksgiving. A perfect time to reflect back and appreciate all that we have. Just over 3 years ago I took big leap, and hopped on a plane with a backpack and headed to Kona. Even though I made the trip so many times before, in 2010 I was more nervous than the year I raced in 1998. This time I carried my future in my backpack. I was trying to put the pieces back together after a life-changing experience and the only way I knew how was through design + sport.
This time I was designing for myself, my son, and our future. With the little cash I had, I bought 25 jerseys, 70 terry cloth wristbands, and 2 dozen tank tops. My goal was to launch Betty Designs. I had no idea if I could sell any of it but I had to take a chance. It turns out I sold everything I had in three days.
I am so humbled by the response, support, and the people I've met along this journey. I cannot thank everyone who has supported me enough. "Thank you" just doesn't cut it. I could not have done it without Gavyn, The Main Freak, my family, friends, mentors and all of you. You guys have been there with from day one listening to my crazy ideas and purchasing everything I made. Happy Thanksgiving to all. We are truly blessed.

BETTY'S FALL OBSESSIONS November 19 2013, 1 Comment
As soon as I get back from Kona every October, it's clear fall has arrived. For us wimpy Californians, that means the days are in the 60s, and evening can drop as low as (gasp) the 50s. Works out fine for me. I freeze and it's an excuse to pull out some of my fall favorites. I put away the fluoro bikinis and pull out the knee-high boots, puffer jackets, flannels and plan a trip to the snow. This season I'm also really in to red. I am typically not a red person, but have found myself in love with the new hue of a Patagonia fave, tomboy-like flannels from Rails (thanks for introducing them to my wallet, Kir!) and rose gold jewelry accents. I also find myself wanting to curl up on the sofa with a nice glass of red. Cheers!
THE EPITOME OF BETTY November 06 2013, 0 Comments
Along the journey of defining Betty Designs, a common recipe kept coming up. Take the things I love, combine them with the influence of runway fashion + surf culture—then create. There is one defining design that became a personal favorite of mine—Snakeskin Cycle. This is my go-to kit when I hit the road. To make room for all the new ideas I have in my brain and sampled in my office, something has to go. Grab this iconic kit now, before they're gone, at an end-of-season discounted price.
BEHIND THE DESIGN: KICK CANCER October 27 2013, 2 Comments
This time of year everyone is thinking about pink, pink, pink. After all, it is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I wanted to do something unique. To give back. To those affected by cancer. I have come across many women who use sport to deal with how the disease has impacted them and their family, and wanted to create a cycling kit design to empower them. Inspire them to fight. Not give up. In Betty's words—Kick Butt!
I already had pink with The Betty kit, and wanted to do something in an unexpected, pretty color combination. That's when I was flipping through the pages of Australian Vogue and saw an ad for Moroccan Oil. They have done an incredible job with their branding. The colors are simply gorgeous. Why not put them on a kit, right?! Oh, and yes, I just had to add a touch of pink as a nod to October. Hopefully this will inspire many to get out and ride. This is a limited edition production.
Pre-order you Kick Cancer kit here! Every year my goal will be to create something new, fresh and more unique. With just the perfect balance of skull + butterfly.
BETTY DESIGNS ATHLETES ANNOUNCED FOR 2014 September 25 2013, 2 Comments
My goal with this program was to choose a total of 10 women to represent Betty Designs in 2014. Because of the overwhelming number of submissions and quality of applicants, I could not limit it to 10. There will be 3 levels of Betty Designs sponsorship in 2014. I am beyond stoked to be working with all of these athletes. All of you embody the Betty lifestyle both on and off the race course. I look forward to seeing everyone out kicking butt in their sick tri kits, cycling clothing and accessories. Here's to a successful 2014.

TOUGH + PRETTY July 07 2013, 0 Comments
It's no secret that I have a bit of a fetish with skulls. Just because I do, doesn't mean I am evil, dark or that you should run from me. You'd be surprised at the mixed reactions I get about my logo. Everything from religious lectures to frightening sideways glances. There is nothing wrong with infusing a little skull in my life. It makes me feel tough. Especially when I race. Silly, I know, but it's all a matter of the mind and if it makes me feel bolder, then so be it. Off the race course I would describe my style as feminine with a bit of a tomboy edge. The juxtaposition of pretty things with something unexpected is pretty fun. I've found some little fashion items to infuse more skull into my life. Try a little skull in your next triathlon, bike ride, masters swim set or night on the town and see if it changes your attitude.

1) perfect pair of denim cut-offs (or maybe 2)
2) fringe bikini. gotta stay current on the beach with the fun trend.
3) white mesh tunic cover-up
4) maxi dresses (one for each night)
5) sexy sandals
6) simple, black racerback tank
7) shimmery tinted moisturizer with SPF
8) friendship bracelets
9) dramatic silver earrings
10) fun, oakley shades
11) trucker hat. I happen to be biased to the Graffiti Trucker
12) zoot running shoes. actually, I'm packing 3 pairs. 1 for running. 1 for cliff jumping. 1 for hiking.
