OHANA December 01 2012, 0 Comments

OHANA

Every year I just HAVE to go to Kona to watch the Ford Ironman World Championship. The Big Island is one of my favorite places on earth. Something about the black lava contrasting with the turquoise blue waters, the smiles of the locals, the weather, and the fact that all the people who I consider to be my extended family, all come together for celebration of the biggest endurance sports event of the year.

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, I am one lucky girl. I get to live, work, and play all within the confines of the endurance sports community, and specifically, the triathlon community. They have become one big, extended family to me. I come back to Kona every October for the family reunion and to renew my soul. I reflect on my life and all that I have to be thankful for. This October it was no different. I came to say goodbye to some parts of my past and to embrace the new, the now, and the future. I launched Betty Designs here in October 2010, and this year made some new partnerships with key brands and athletes. All while cheering my heart out on Saturday for my inspirational friends and teammates.

As I embark on the second chapter for Gavyn and I, I have many to thank. Your support has been overwhelming and humbling. Thank you to my friends, clients, colleagues for believing in me and inspiring me—both on and off the race course. 2012 will bring some new designs (yes, the PINK LAVA kit, a design collaboration with Kestrel Bicycles), new opportunities and ways to continue to grow my Ohana. They say you don’t get to choose your family. I disagree.

WORDS TO LIVE + DESIGN BY December 01 2012, 0 Comments

A little insight into things I think about, and what motivates me. The first year of my online store surpassed my expectations and I couldn’t have done it without the support of all of you. Thank you. My plan is to continually launch new designs that are different than what is out there. They aren’t for everyone, but that’s the point. Be bold. Be edgy. Be unconventional. + Kick Butt in 2012!

PERSONAL WORKS December 01 2012, 0 Comments

We all need an outlet. For our extra energy, enthusiasm and sometimes just to cope with the curveballs that come our way. I am very lucky. I have two. One is design. The other is triathlon. Anyone close to me knows that 2010 was a challenging year for me. Not one to keep my mouth shut, I decided to create something to reflect last year and all the positive things that will come from the experience. One of my new designs, the Fairytale Jersey may look like an edgy print, but it’s much more. The sleeves boldly post the date, that my husband decided after almost 14 years of marriage, was not the life he wanted anymore. That’s it. I said it. The print contains little nuggets that reflect people, places and things relevant in my life. Interestingly enough, I recently stumbled upon the the Story Maxi Dress by Quiksilver

I wonder what this designer’s story is…….

SOME SICK SHOES December 01 2012, 0 Comments

From time-to-time I will post about some cool finds for sporty girls. There is no reason women can’t have it all when it comes to sports gear, right? All I can say is—it’s about time! So stoked that gear for women is taking a nod from the fashion world. I’ve always had a fascination for metallics, shimmer, glitter—”bling” (if you know-what-I-mean). After all, a girl has to look good while out there doing her thing. Sidi has always made killer cycling and triathlon shoes. I’ve been racing in the T2 for the last 6 years and even went out of my way to purchase the men’s version so I could have the shiny patent-leather-looking white with the full carbon sole. They have just upped their game with the release of the T2.6 Carbon Lite in Silver Mamba/White Vernice. Let’s just say that silver + snakeskin = ultimate fashion meets function in my fave tri shoe. If you’re like me and have to have them (NOW) go shop at Nytro

BUTTERFLIES ON YOUR CROTCH December 01 2012, 0 Comments

I like to keep people on their toes. I spend a lot of time at masters swimming and, quite frankly, find it boring to keep looking at the black line. I check out what people are wearing and wonder why swimsuits can’t be more fun. I also don’t like to wear exactly what everyone else is wearing.

The folks at Splish were happy to indulge me by letting me design my own suit. Every year I design one training bikini just to see what people will think. It’s especially fun to put a bold motif  “down there”. Don’t tell me you don’t check people out at the pool. I know better. And while we can all pretend we don’t, I create suits to make sure you do. I’ve been known to put skulls, butterflies and peacock feathers on the crotch of suits.

Because swimming gets boring after a while.

BRING BACK THE GOLD LAME KNICKERS December 01 2012, 0 Comments

“You look like a dude on a bike.” Words that forever changed the way I looked at cycling clothing. Dad was not very tactful with that one. He reminded me that I always was a tomboy and therefore he could see why I took up triathlon. I may be a tomboy, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to be feminine.

A month later I snagged a poster of World Champion mountain biker Paola Pezzo. She was not only an insane athlete, she was pretty, and when standing on the podium in her gold lamé knickers, she was a crazy mix of tough chick meets runway model.

That sparked something in me. Women can be strong AND feminine at the same time. And they don’t have to look like a boy when kicking butt.
